Mainframe Computer

A mainframe computer is a computer that has more capacity in data processing, storing, etc. in comparison to the general computer system. Basically, it is a big centralized machine that contains large memory, huge storage space, multiple high-grade processors that makes it capable to execute multiple complex programs concurrently at very high speed. A mainframe computer has more processing power than other classes of computers such as minicomputers, servers, workstations, and personal computers.

A mainframe computer is primarily used by large organizations for critical applications, bulk data processing like census, industry and consumer statistics, enterprise resource planning, scientific research, and transaction processing, etc.

Components of Mainframe Computer

High quality and long-lasting components of the mainframe computer make its performance outstanding. The major components of a mainframe computer are as under:

  • Processing Unit
  • Controller Unit
  • Storage Unit
  • Multiprocessors
  • Motherboard
  • Cluster Controller System
  • Input/Output Channels

Uses of mainframe computer

Mainframe computers are primarily used by large organizations for bulk data processing like census, industry and consumer statistics, enterprise resource planning, scientific research, transaction processing, and critical applications, etc.

Advantages of Mainframe Computer

Major advantages of mainframe computer are given as under:

Ultra Computing Power

A mainframe computer is capable of processing huge data and run complicated applications with ultra computing speed.

Scale-ability

Mainframe computers support extra high-power processors. The same can also be expanded by adding multiple ultra power processors, memory, and storage device whenever required for processing huge data concurrently.

Reliability and durability

A mainframe computer system is capable to identify its errors and bugs. It can also self recover from these bugs without any other embedded resources. Modern mainframe computers are capable to run for a long time approx 40 to 50 years without getting any errors.

Security and Protection

The mainframe computer system allows more attention to authentication and protection for storing data and makes an extra level of security.
